SABLE BOULEVARD IMPROVEMENTS

JR Engineering prepared a Conceptual Design Alternatives Analysis for the Sable Boulevard Improvements Project in Brighton, Colorado, covering the segment from 120th Avenue to Bromley Lane. The study evaluated roadway, traffic, drainage, cost, and right-of-way impacts to determine feasible buildout options for one of Brighton’s key north–south corridors. Three primary build alternatives were developed—Initial, Interim, and Ultimate—each with several design variations addressing intersection control, drainage treatment, and multimodal facilities. The analysis provided the City with a clear path from near-term capacity improvements to full arterial buildout consistent with Brighton’s transportation master plan.
Phased Corridor Improvements
The Initial Build focused on addressing immediate operational needs at the lowest cost, widening Sable Boulevard to four lanes south of E-470 with options for curb and gutter or shoulder/swale drainage and adding a 10-foot multi-use trail. The Interim Build expanded improvements to four lanes throughout the corridor with turn lanes, sidewalks on both sides, and upgraded drainage, offering a balance between budget and performance while accommodating medium-term traffic growth. The Ultimate Build envisioned a full arterial cross-section—six lanes south of E-470 and four lanes north—complete with curb and gutter, raised medians, upgraded bridge crossings, and full multimodal access.
Alternatives Evaluation & Recommendations
Each alternative included a detailed traffic impact study, drainage and water quality analysis, and conceptual cost estimates ranging from approximately $29 million for the Initial Build to $98 million for the Ultimate Build. The memorandum also evaluated property acquisition needs, with greater right-of-way impacts under the Interim and Ultimate scenarios. JR’s comprehensive analysis provided the City of Brighton with a phased and data-driven roadmap for improving mobility, safety, and drainage along the Sable Boulevard corridor in support of long-term regional growth.
